This is in essence how I do my 3D printed fractals.

The model is made with Mandelbulb3D, the voxel slices are exported to PNG and converted to OBJ in Fiji, then optimized in Meshlab and exported as STL, controlled and repaired in Netfabb and 3D printed at Shapeways.com, here in gold plated stainless steel.

3D printing fractals is still a relatively complex exercise which needs a fair amount of trial and error, something difficult to explain in a tutorial.

Thanks Nic! I was actually surprised that they printed it in steel, because the thin wires were below the 3mm recommendation. This is due to the manual checks that they perform and the experience of the production planner who will "guess" from experience if the model will print or not.
